We brought Izzy home this am. She is a little better, she wouldn't eat for the vet and become very aggressive while there. The vet thinks that being home with us will help her feel more comfortable so she will eat. The test from the U of M lab came back on the Iams adult cat food, it contained salmonella. The vets office has contacted the Iams company, and I have taken all the info off the bag before returning it back to Tractor supply where i purchased it. We are not sure how many animals have to get sick and go through this before Iams issues a recall, but sadly we are positive it is not 1. Upon the vets instructions we are trying to get her to eat a medicated science diet for now. I did get her to eat 2 piece's this am, it's a start. Thank you all for your concern. I will keep the updates coming. And Do NOT FEED Iams, at least not for awhile. I know I will never feed it to any of my babies again. After we get Iz back to full health I will be putting her on Chicken Soup.

First thing I read on the computer this morning. Great news that Izzy is getting better and the problem has been diagnosed. Hope she has a speeding recovery.

That is good news, glad you found the problem. Hope she gets well fast, and puts on some weight...
I'm a little surprised the Iams food is tainted. It's supposed to be one of the "high end" foods, right???

Dan, according to my vets office and a couple of comsumer sites, Iams has had a few recalls over the yrs, one big one that also contained contaminated foods, there where pet deaths reported. And yes they use to be considered high end, but have now been dubed as middle road. Foods such as science diet, chicken soup, nutra source, and blue buffalo have excieded Iams. I feed my dogs Blue buffalo and I could kick myself for not changing Izzy to it.

thanks, Good to know...
Just hope Izzy takes to the new food and puts some weight on.
As I mentioned, Scoots was double her weight at a year, and 16 very solid pounds now, at just over two years. He's male, so that may be some of it, but this breed is BIG! 5 pounds, IMHO, is tiny for a DLX at a year...

I'm so happy to hear she is home with you and doing better.. That is just awful about the Iams! I'm so upset about it, I will not ever feed the kittens Iams again.. I don't care how far I have to go to get the Chicken Soup for kittens.. it is well worth it .. Yes, I know that Iams had a few recalls on their adult food but never on the kitten ( that we know of) but as we now know it takes a few deaths before they will recall, NOT a way to do business.. Now I'm wondering if the food has anything to do with her growth as well.. Yes Dan 5# is very small for this breed even if she is a female, most domestic cats get to 8 # some 10#( unless they are very fat and over weight) but a 5 pound cat is very small.. Oh well, she can be small but still mighty :-) Just so happy she is on her way back to health.

glad to hear that Izzy is hopefully on the mend! Being home has got to improve her attitude and appetite.
One thing I wanted to mention - other than the medicated foods (which are great for the things they're needed for) stay away from Science Diet. It is just as much crap food as Iams and others that are mostly grains. Cats especially are carnivores and do not need corn and other grains in their diets. It is mostly filler and not worth the money.
I say stick with high quality grain free foods like Orijen, Acana, Taste of the Wild, etc.

fyi on past recalls.. the kidney problems is what Izzy is dealing with now. She did eat a little this morning after coming home, but is now vomiting again, the vet said that its now a wait and see situation. cats.lovetoknow.com/Iams_Cat_Food_Recallalso if you put Iams recall into your search a Iams recall list will come up, there are lots of different Iams cat foods including some for kittens that have been recalled over the yrs. What a scary thing. Makes me want to make my own food for them.

Deb, you are so right, I can remember a few times that the Science Diet was recalled as well.. knock wood there has never been a recall on any of the Chicken Soup diets.. I agree, if I only had a few cats I would make my own as well but with 24 of them it would be a all day job :-) I have made food occasionally for them, usually chicken and rice, when they are having a stomach problem ( runny stool) it will clear it up real fast. Also remember to give them the kitty grass, I grow it for mine as they can't go out and eat it, they do need some for their little tummy's :-)

I just got a email from Tawnia and Izzy is in surgery today! She said she started to vomit again and it was just bile coming up because her poor tummy was empty, so the vet is doing 'exploratory ''surgery and Tawnia will bring her home this afternoon because she doesn't want to leave her alone in the vet office over the weekend.. so tons of prayers are needed for Izzy.. I just don't understand the surgery part since they already did ex-rays and there is no blockage, but the kidney's and pancreas is very enlarged still. I think she needs time to recover from the poison she ate in that food, but I'm not a vet, just very concerned and upset with Iams. I have put the info out to a friend of mine who has 2 of my babies ( well they are 9 now) but she has several other hybrid cats and is on every forum and cat list you can think of so she sent the info about Iams out to over 3 hundred people from her to Europe! She also told me that Iams does research on caged cats!! So never will I ever purchase another product from them and hope no one does. Up, I'm steaming today !!

Here is the latest from Tawnia on Izzy.. maybe this time she will stay home and recover.. Hi Arlene, Izzy came through surgery good. My head is swirling the last few days with her being sick, It's a lot of info to take in, I'm going to try to explain it the best I can, the salmonella caused a infection in her intestine and i guess because of that the pancreas. The vet said that if they go in and do exploratory surgery, there is a chance when they see the intestine they could better treat her. Xrays are great but not always as helpful in something like this. They went in, and ended up removing just a small amount of infected tissue on the intestine. The vet was happy with the turn out, and finally gave me hope. She thinks with a special diet and healing time, Its possible that Iz will make a full recovery. The next 48 hours will be the worst for her (and me) because the vet had to cut into the intestines there is a chance of leakage, although the vet said the rest of the intestines looked healthy its just a risk with this kind of surgery. I brought her home about half hour ago, the Vet and I both agreed that home is the best place for her instead of keeping her there over the weekend ( Iz does not like them very much these days) and she is now sleeping on my bed, while I sit here next to her and email back all my very concerned friends. She looks like she's been put through the ringer, but is giving me some small Izzy purrs. Thank you and all the group for the prayers, they must have been working, the vet seemed to do a 180 with confidence that she will recover from this. I will keep the updates coming along with some pics. This whole thing has exhausted me, mentally and physically. Im now going to lay down and take a cat nap with my girl. Tawnia Lee

Ok, Izzy is home again as you know, but the vet sent Tawnia home with Medacam for Izzy's pain.. I just posted info on "Medacam" for cat's.. it's important to know and I'm surprised her vet didn't know that Medacam has been found to cause kidney failure in cat's! Great! Just what poor Izzy needs now, more damage to her little kidneys.. !!The vet is closed for the weekend so now she has to decide to either let Izzy be in pain or give it to her and hope that the 2 days of it won't do more damage.. man this just is so sad !! DAM!

Tawnia said that she got in touch with the vet and was able to switch the pain med from the Medacam to Tolfedine.. I think she had a little problem with the vet so she said she has also switched vets.. I believe it had something to do with attitude ( on the vet's part) anyway so far it sounds like Izzy just might be back to her old self real soon but Tawnia's hubby is now calling Izzy the 6 million dollar cat :-) I feel so bad for them but as long as Iz gets better :-)

This is the latest from Tawnia.
Ok, I've been on this since 7am. No luck with pharmacist, but I did get a hold of the Vet, the ER answering service took my name and # and Doc Letasse called me back. Im returning the Metacam to the emergency hospital and picking up Tolfedine today. Its well worth the drive. Im not real pleased with the Vet, which is disappointing because I've used her for yrs. The Metacam does say Feline Metacam on the label and Doc L said that there is kidney disease risk with ANY pain meds for cats, but upon me insisting again, she is letting the ER hospital know Im coming to pick up the new med. I think the vet thinks Im a know it all pain in the butt, but I dont care. I was right about the " wait and see situation" and Im right about this too, thanks to you ! And a FYI for every one, Dont let your Vet bully you. Our animals cant fight for themselves, they rely on us to do it for them. As pet owners it is our job to make sure they are cared for. As of Monday Izzy's new Vet will be Doc B at Ash Animal Care, it's a hike from here, but will be well worth it. ! I've never had to be so Stern with a vet or doctor before, but boy oh boy they have brought me to my mean Momma side. The new vets office came highly recommend from Dr Deland who is our Horse vet. He's amazing and I only wish he cared for small animals as well. Arlene I cant thank you enough for the info, and prayers. I have been a basket case through this, and it helps to know that there are people out there that love there kitty's as much as I love mine. On a lighter note, my husband has now nick named Izzy the 6 million dollar cat. He thinks she should start poohing gold and diamonds. LOL.
