Ok, so now I have something else to add to this .. A few months ago my vet called me and told me to discontinue the use of "Medacam" on my cat's. I keep a supply of it for pain. When they have surgery or get hurt, anything else that may cause pain I use it..He told me that he had received resent info from the distributor saying that research has found it to cause kidney failure in cat's!! It's perfectly safe on dogs but should not be used on cat's.

This is a message I sent to my Vet last night after reading about Metacam on this forum: Hi Dr. Crutchfield What was Emma's condition called?? I heard that Metacam can cause kidney failure in cats. It's ok for dogs but not cats. I don't want to give her anymore. What else is there? Poor little girl...she tried to pee on my nightie again :(And she's been bitchy with the boys!! Even Gizmo is getting fed up with her attitude and is growling and hissing at her like crazy! Thanks and sorry for bugging you outside the office Jackie Hi Jackie She has a sterile cystitis, and Metacam can help with the pain and inflammation of it. As long as Emma is young and healthy, Metacam is great for cats. They made a special Metacam Feline, which you have, that is half the strength of dogs because cats can be more sensitive to it, but for nearly a decade we have been giving cat's the dog version of Metacam with very little issues. If there is pre-existing kidney disease, Metacam can block some of the bloodflow to the kidneys, causing the compromise. Emma had Metacam after her spay and did ok with it. There are other pain medications we can consider if you are still worried about the Metacam after reading this. I hope the Feliway chills her out. Brent This is her condition: www.uvma.org/cats/urinary-problems.htmIt almost sounds like the condition the little kitty had that just passed away on the operating table! I'm pretty concerned at this point.
