I have a question for everyone. I am thinking of changing the name of our breed from Desert Lynx to Mountain Lynx.. I'm so tired of the other breeders using the name "Desert Lynx" for the straight eared Highland Lynx.,.I think people get very confused and I want to do something about it.. so what do you all think??

I have a question for everyone. I am thinking of changing the name of our breed from Desert Lynx to Mountain Lynx.. I'm so tired of the other breeders using the name "Desert Lynx" for the straight eared Highland Lynx.,.I think people get very confused and I want to do something about it.. so what do you all think?? How would that effect our cats already registered as a Desert Lynx? IMHO, maybe not the best idea. There is a parable in the motorcycle world. Many other manufactures make a motorcycle that looks like a Harley Davidson. Most are Japanese brands, and dang do they try hard to copy the original. I see these folks when I ride, and they'll go out of their way to point out how, "It's just like your Harley, only cheaper". As I know quite a bit about motorcycles, I'll start by asking about certain things I know Harleys have or do, that the copies do not have or do. After a string of half a dozen, "Um, no mine doesn't have or do that" answers, I'll say, "Well gee, I guess it's not just like a Harley, but it certainly is cheaper", and leave them to ride away on their imitation motorcycle. So no Arlene, I wouldn't change the breed name. You, I and the rest of the folks that have your kids know we have the real deal. While it's unlikely that I'll ever run into a guy with a fake Desert Lynx under his arm at the places I hang out, I'd love to have the same conversation I do with the guys on fake Harley's... Do you remember some of the first conversations we had? I searched for over a year until I found you, a reputable breeder. I spoke with several others that left me less than impressed. I could have had a cheap copy of a Desert Lynx for less, and wouldn't of had to drive as far to get it. But, with your education and experience, I feel I made the right choice. Scooters personality, temperament, markings, intelligence, health and everything else about him, are proof that you are doing things the right way... I say keep up the good fight, and know that you are breeding REAL Desert Lynx kittens. You know you're doing it the right way, and so do we. We know you are not selling throw away kittens that didn't come out right...

OK Dan, I do understand what your saying but think of it this way... how would you feel if the cheap knock off bike also had the name "Harley Davidson" on them along with the logo and all? That is the problem I'm facing with the other breeders. They are using the name Desert Lynx when they are selling straight eared Highland Lynx. As for the papers you have on your babies, that is not a problem to get new one's with the new name of "Mountain Lynx" on it once I switch the breed over. I'm just so tired of trying to fight them as well as educate people as to what they are buying.. but once I re-name them then they can not use the new name, well I guess REFR can also make a new registry for them as well and do the same thing once more.. just trying to separate what I have from the others.. so any suggestions?? :-) I know you are not trying to order from McD's when it comes to the color and sex you would like just giving you a hard time because it's fun to tease :-) Hay a old lady has to have some fun !!

I see your point, and for the record, some do put the logo on their bikes. Ultimately, it's your call. It doesn't really mater to me either way, Scooter is great, and it wont change anything about how I feel about him, or where I go to get him a friend. I'm still making the drive to Selma, regardless of what word precedes Lynx... I would like to hear others opinion on a name change though...

I think it is a little late for me to do a name change.. I spoke to the registry and it would take me years to get to the top of the list when people are looking for a Desert Lynx, so I guess it's a scratch on the new name but I really do like it better :-)
